Breaking Down Back Pain

As people age, bone strength, muscle elasticity and tone tend to decrease.  Our discs begin to lose fluid and flexibility, which decreases their ability to cushion the vertebrae.

Pain can occur when, for example, someone lifts something too heavy or over-stretches, causing a sprain, strain, or spasm in one of the muscles or ligaments in the back.  If the spine becomes overly strained or compressed, a disc may rupture or bulge outward.  This rupture can put pressure on one of the more than 50 nerves rooted to the spinal cord that control body movements and transmit signals from the body to the brain. When these nerve roots become compressed or irritated, back pain results.  This pain can interfere with even the most basic daily activities, including walking.

DON'T LET BACK PAIN INTERFERE WITH YOUR ACTIVE LIFESTYLE!

Back pain affects millions of Americans and for many it starts from the ground up.  Ignoring how feet affect the lower back can sometimes mean missing the source of back pain.  When walking, the body must adjust to many forces which affect both the feet and the spine.  When your foot hits the ground, your whole body feels the effect.  The greater the impact of your step, the more impact it has on your body.  When you run, your lower extremities absorb two to five times your body weight.  This increased stress on your body can result in lower back pain.

WALKING ON LOG
Exercise may be the most effective way to speed recovery from low back pain and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles.  Maintaining and building muscle strength is particularly important for people with skeletal irregularities.  ASPEN Physical Therapy can provide gentle exercises that help keep muscles moving and speed the recovery process.  A routine of back-healthy activities may include stretching exercises and movement therapy.  These will not only improve walking, but will improve coordination and develop proper posture and muscle balance.
